We have covered in Part 1, the different types of jewelry and what they are made of material wise, up to and including the different shapes that the jewelry typically comes in. Obviously if you have the creativity or the money to do custom pieces it might be different for you, but that piece covered the general pieces. Part 2 covered the different tools used in various piercings and the sanitization methods used for piercing. All of this is very important information to keep in mind when selecting a piercer as well as when selecting the type of piercing you want. Please keep the following points in mind for the piercer that you select. You should ask your piercer some questions before allowing them to actually pierce you should look around and observe some things for yourself, at a minimum the following: Are the premises clan and tidy? Is the piercer sober? Is all of the staff sober in general? Is the room restricted to piercing one person at a time? After those observations from your own viewpoint you should consider asking the piercer for documentary proof of Health Department registration, last health score if applicable to your area, What types of needles are used (answer should be single use only), as well as Is all re-usable equipment autoclaved before usage? You should always tell your piercer if you have any serious medical problems, especially anything heart related, if you are pregnant or if you are breastfeeding, also if you have any transmissible blood diseases you should also tell the piercer this information so that precautions can be taken to prevent the spread. Remember that the piercers job is to make this as simple as possible, the more information you give them the better off you will be. This installment is going to cover in detail the navel piercing. This is a very popular piercing amongst women; however, a few males have also gotten their navels pierced. Since mostly women are getting this piercing, you will probably notice that most jewelry is designed for women, from the Play Boy Bunny pieces, to the pink sparkly designs, and other such girly ideas. There are a few pieces that are being designed for men specifically, however those pieces tend to be more expensive since they are rarer to find. In the general practice of a navel piercing, the top of the navel is pierced; however, there have been some who pierce the bottom, sides, or even all four sides of the navel to make a cross design. Where specifically you pierce is up to you, however most jewelry is designed for the top piercing, which is the standard piercing a piercer will typically give if you just ask for a simple navel piercing. The standard jewelry in a new navel piercing will be 14 gauges, preferably either surgical stainless steel or titanium with no frilly parts, or extra pieces. While it does look plain and boring, you want the initial piece to be as simple as possible so as not to be hung on any clothing, or make cleaning the piercing properly any harder than necessary. While those beautiful decorative pieces are awesome to look at they also have extra places for bacteria to hide thus increasing the chances of infection. Standard healing time for most people is three months even up to one year depending upon how quickly your body heals. Infections and poorly chosen jewelry can make this time lean more towards the one year end, where as few problems and proper jewelry will shorten the time to heal. You must clean the piercing at least two times a day with some form of antibacterial soap that is fragrance free. Fragrance free is important as the fragrances will sometimes cause irritation and make the piercing irritated, which is never good to stress a new piercing of any type. It is also important that you must resist the urge to play with the new piercing, and do not touch it ever without washing your hands first, and do not let others touch it at all, unless they are a trained professional, this keeps down the risk of infections and other problems. It is highly recommended that loose clothing be worn for the first two months minimum to help ensure the jewelry does not part to one side or the other. Many piercers also recommend the use of Vitamin C and Zinc to help promote the body's healing process, whether you choose to do this or not is completely up to you. Some people prefer to do this, others feel it is a waste of time, the choice is ultimately yours. Do not change your jewelry at all until the piercing is at least two months old, and make sure you carefully clean any jewelry before inserting it. It is also important to note that while many piercers prefer to use curved barbells for initial piercings there are harder to clean, they are less prone to parking however than circular barbells. The drawback to a circular barbell or captive bead ring is that they are heavier than a curved barbell and are more likely to park to one side of the navel or the other. However, the circular barbell and captive bead ring jewelry are much easier to clean since the jewelry can easily be spinned through the piercing while cleaning to ensure the whole piece is clean. While some piercers will pierce a navel with a smaller gauge than 14, it is highly unrecommended. Smaller gauges will increase the chances of the piercing migrating out of the skin, and causing scarring and heartache. Always use 14 gauge or larger for a navel piercing as this is the best size to use. Women who become pregnant with a navel piercing are often able to leave the standard jewelry in until approximately six months, once the stomach is too big, it is often possible to replace that hard jewelry with the soft jewelry of the pregnancy belly rings. These rings are wonderful for pregnant women who do not want to lose their piercing because of pregnancy. However, please be aware that as the stomach grows, it will cause the piercing to look distorted at some point. Human skin being so stretchy makes this possible, great thing about our skin is that it will regain it's normal shape after delivering the baby and getting back into shape so that the piercing is not lost forever. For the actual piercing, the piercer will wear gloves, to make sure that no fluids are passed between people. Typically, the piercer will look closely at the body position to ensure that the correct placement is chosen. Before the piercer starts the initial piercing the equipment should be pulled out of plastic packaging and placed onto a sterile tray or table. The piercer should mark the place to be pierced to help ensure the piercing will be even and straight. Next, the piercer will carefully take a pair of forceps, clamp the skin around the markings, and make sure the dots on the top and the bottom both line up correctly so that the piercing is correct. For the actual piercing the piercer will have the skin clamped between the forceps, the piercer will open the needle right before beginning, and use either a cork or a tube to catch the needle as it exits the skin to keep from being injured. Once the needle is inserted, the jewelry will be attached to the top of the needle and pulled through. The forceps are then removed, and the balls attached to the jewelry to hold it in place. An initial quick cleaning should be done after the piercing itself is finished to make sure the area is clean. That is it; there is nothing else to the standard navel piercing. The only difference in the placement procedures will be which side of the navel is actually pierced, which is only a small minor difference. One of the best benefits of the navel piercing is that it is quick, and relatively painless. Next installment will cover another type of piercing and what to expect. Please always make sure you carefully clean any piercing very well with the anti bacterial soap, I strongly encourage dial anti-bacterial. |
