Most women, who have naval piercings that become pregnant, worry about their belly ring tearing or their piercing healing up if they remove the ring. There is, however, a third consideration, naval piercing stretch marks. During my first pregnancy, I didn't get a single stretch mark until the final month, and then they were everywhere, including a perfect X radiating from my naval piercing. At the time I thought it odd, but ignored it, assuming it was an amusing fluke. However, in later conversation with other mothers who had their belly button pierced as well, I found this X-shaped stretch mark was common in women with belly rings. What causes naval piercing stretch marks? A stretch mark is actually a scar, caused by tearing in dermis, or middle layer of skin. Stretch marks occur when skin is rapidly stretched during times when hormone levels are high, such as pregnancy or puberty. Certain hormones hinder the formation of collagen and elastic fibers in the skin, making it less capable of stretching with your growing abdomen during pregnancy in this case. The belly button itself is also a scar, created by the removal of your umbilical cord at birth. It remains connected to your abdominal wall, which is pushed outward by your new baby. As a result, belly buttons often change shape during pregnancy, and are already a high-pressure location as far as stretching goes. A piercing simply creates a weaker point in the skin that's more susceptible to tearing. Why an X-shape is common is unknown. Can you avoid a belly piercing stretch mark? Not really. Stretch marks themselves have many risk factors, most of which are unavoidable. Young, white mothers with a family history of stretch marks, that begin their pregnancy overweight, gain an excess of 31 pounds during their pregnancy, and/or are carrying large babies are at the highest risk. You can make an effort to keep your skin as healthy as possible by maintaining proper nutrition, exercising regularly, and moisturizing your skin, but unfortunately, genetics primarily have control in this case. How should you care for your naval piercing during your pregnancy? Outside of keeping it clean as you normally would, it's really up to you. I personally, and many other mothers I know have found they can remove their belly ring for years at a time without it healing. Others feel more comfortable using fishing line or special pregnancy bar bells until their baby is born. I also know many women who have kept their regular belly rings in throughout their pregnancies without complication. My midwife during my pregnancy did warn that in some cases, stretching of the naval can cause injury if a naval ring is left in.It really comes down to what you feel comfortable with.
